運用「階梯效果模型」,為自己增加職場價值的六個步驟是:(1)知悉、(2)了解、(3)喜歡、(4)偏好、(5)確信、(6)購買。

假設你洪福齊天、幸運無比地成功踏上前面三個階梯。接下來的關卡,挑戰愈來愈大,難度也愈來愈高。

你要面臨的第四階是讓老闆在眾多被他知悉、了解、喜歡的優秀員工中,對你產生偏好(Preference);即在眾競爭者中,特別喜歡你。

這一關非常難,因為有兩個因素是無法控制的:(1)老闆的心,(2)競爭對手的天分與表現。

老闆的心,當然難猜。所以,不要花時間與心思在此方面。

競爭對手的天分,由老天爺決定,與你無關。競爭對手的表現,操控於他自己與他的主管,你也無法影響。因此,第二個因素你絲毫沒有著力點。

還有,對一個人產生偏好,可能在知悉、了解與喜歡的過程中,已經漸漸形成;未必是一個獨立的階段。

如果依前述說法,我們在「讓老闆偏好你」這一階梯,甚麼也不能做,甚麼也不必做?

答案可以是「對」,此時此刻無須也不能特別做什麼事,為自己加分。

答案也可以是「錯」,因為這個議題的時間區間,可長可短,由老闆掌握。如果老闆不急,過程漫長,則日久見人心;平日的言行舉止,要維持出眾表現: 具備這些特質的員工,我相信所有老闆不僅喜歡,而且對他們會自然產生偏好。
